Grenada: Nutmeg Jam
The story of Nutmeg has often been told, how the English in the 17th Century battled with the Dutch in the Moluccas, seized some seeds and fled west to Singapore then on to Grenada.
Until the 1990s this small Caribbean island was the undisputed king of the western world’s nutmeg industry supplying some of the world’s best product to hundreds of important clients in the food and beverage industry.
Then came Hurricane Ivan and the virtual destruction of Grenada’s agriculture. There were even calls to remove nutmeg from the Grenadian flag!!
Denzil, who had already worked here helping set up Laurel Spice Gardens was asked to help rebrand Grenada nutmeg and re-invigorate the GCNA , the islands nutmeg cooperative marketing and processing organisation.
Realising the immense potential for nutmeg not just in food and beverages but in medicine, cosmetics, fashion and tourism Denzil helped support and promote an ever increasing number of local producers of value added nutmeg products.
He then came up with the idea of launching the world’s first nutmeg festival a two week event including best farmer prizes, special nutmeg food and drink competitions, fashion shows and of course music in the form of a Nutmeg Jam!!!
Ever since that time Denzil has realised the enormous potential for eco-tourism in island states and even helped organise the first ever Agro-Tourism Conference on the island of St Kitts to attract funds and attention to this sector.
